Gecko Enclosures & Care

When setting up an enclosure for your gecko, it's important to create an environment that mimics their natural habitat and provides them with the necessary elements to thrive. Here are some essential items you should consider including:

1. Terrarium: Start by selecting an appropriate-sized terrarium made of glass or plastic to house your gecko. Ensure it provides ample space for the gecko to move around comfortably.

2. Substrate: Choose a suitable substrate to line the bottom of the enclosure. Options such as cypress mulch, coconut fiber, etc work well for geckos. Avoid using materials that could pose a choking or ingestion hazard.

3. Hiding spots: Geckos are nocturnal creatures and require hiding spots to feel secure during the day. Provide natural-looking cave-like structures, cork bark, or commercially available hides for them to retreat into.

4. Climbing branches/Cork bark: Geckos are adept climbers and benefit from having branches within their enclosure. Natural or artificial branches positioned at different heights enable them to explore and exercise their climbing skills. Cork bark plates and rounds make excellent additions and the geckos enjoy this type of bark.

5. Heat source: Maintaining an adequate temperature is crucial for your gecko's wellbeing. Install an appropriate heat source like an under-tank heater (use a thermostat) or a heat lamp on one side of the enclosure. This allows your gecko to regulate its body temperature effectively.

6. Thermometer: A reliable thermometer is essential to monitor and maintain the temperature inside the enclosure. Place it at the appropriate height to ensure you are providing the optimal thermal gradient for your gecko.

7. Humidity gauge/Mister: Many gecko species require specific humidity levels. Acquire a hygrometer to measure the humidity within the enclosure accurately. A water mister/sprayer will also be a necessity.

8. Water dish: Ensure a shallow, sturdy water dish is available within the enclosure. Geckos need access to fresh water at all times, and a water dish also helps maintain the required humidity levels in their environment.

9. Food
dish: for the geckos diet and a feeding dish for insects can be used. You can even reuse bottle caps for feeding the gecko diet. The other dish for insects is great for putting insects in and calcium supplement.

10. Artificial plants: Adding some artificial plants can enhance the aesthetic appeal of the enclosure while creating a more natural habitat for your gecko. Ensure they are non-toxic and securely rooted to prevent any potential hazards.

11. Calcium and vitamin supplements: To promote healthy bone growth and prevent deficiencies, dust your gecko's food with calcium and vitamin supplements as recommended by your veterinarian. These supplements aid in maintaining their overall well-being.

12. Food: Providing a well rounded diet of live insects and specially formulated gecko diets. You can also make your own fruit smoothies from fresh or frozen fruit as an additional treat.

Substrate

The choice of substrate for New Caledonian geckos, such as Chahoua geckos and Gargoyle geckos, is an essential aspect of creating a suitable and comfortable habitat for them. The right substrate not only provides a naturalistic environment but also aids in maintaining proper humidity levels and supports the gecko's health. Here are some suitable substrate options for New Caledonian geckos:

Cypress Mulch: Cypress mulch is an excellent substrate choice that helps maintain humidity levels and is safe for New Caledonian geckos. It is relatively long-lasting and can be spot-cleaned to maintain a clean environment.

Coconut Fiber Substrate (Coir)
: Coconut fiber substrate, often sold as coir or eco earth, is a popular choice for New Caledonian geckos. It is natural, holds moisture well, and creates a soft and comfortable surface for geckos to walk on.

Organic Soil (Forest Soil)
: A blend of pet safe soil can be great for creating a natural environment and bioactive vivarium.

Sphagnum Moss
: Sphagnum moss is often used in combination with other substrates to increase humidity levels and provide hiding spots for geckos. It also helps with shedding; it can be misted to maintain proper moisture and can be put into a hide box.

Paper Towels
: For hatchling geckos or during quarantine, using paper towels as a temporary substrate is practical. These options are easy to clean and monitor for signs of health.

Dechlorinating Water

Dechlorinating water refers to the process of removing or neutralizing chlorine and other harmful chemicals present in tap water. Chlorine is commonly added to municipal water supplies as a disinfectant to kill bacteria and other microorganisms, making the water safe for human consumption.

There are several ways to dechlorinate water:

Letting it stand: One simple method is to let the water sit in an open container for at least 24 hours. During this time, the chlorine will naturally dissipate from the water, making it safe for use.

Water conditioner
: Using a water conditioner or dechlorinator specifically designed for aquarium or reptile use is a more reliable and immediate method. These products instantly neutralize chlorine and chloramine, ensuring the water is safe for your pets.

Activated carbon
: Running tap water through an activated carbon filter can also remove chlorine and chloramine, making the water safe for use.
